Frequently Asked Questions

Iskanderkul Lake is located in the Gissar Range of the Fann Mountains, Sughd Province of Tajikistan, at an elevation of 2,195m above sea level. It is approximately 100km north of Dushanbe.

Late June to mid-September is ideal — the weather is warmest, roads are fully passable, and the lake has its most vivid turquoise color. We run tours year-round, but winter access requires a suitable vehicle and road conditions vary.

A standard Tajikistan tourist e-visa is required (apply at evisa.tj). No special GBAO permit is needed for Iskanderkul. Always carry your passport — there are police checkpoints on the road that we navigate for you.

The drive takes approximately 3–4 hours each way, via the M34 highway north toward Khujand. We depart at 8:00 AM and include a scenic stop at Anzob Pass. The last section of road is unpaved — a capable off-road vehicle is essential.

The hike to the “Fann Niagara” is easy to moderate — a 30-minute walk along a defined path with some uneven rocky ground. Trekking boots are recommended. Most fitness levels can manage it comfortably.

Swimming is allowed, but Iskanderkul’s water stays around 10°C even in summer — very cold. The nearby Snake Lake is shallower and significantly warmer, making it much more pleasant for swimming.

Signal is extremely limited or non-existent at Iskanderkul. Let contacts know you will be off-grid for the day. We recommend downloading offline maps before departure — your guide will have all navigational knowledge you need.

Iskanderkul serves as the starting point for multi-day treks to the Dukdon Pass (leading to the Seven Lakes) and the Kaznok Pass (leading to the Alauddin Lakes). Ask us about our multi-day trekking packages.

At 2,195m the risk is low for most people, but those sensitive to elevation should hydrate well throughout the day. If you have a medical history of altitude issues, consult your doctor and let us know in your booking notes.

The name comes from “Iskandar” — the Persian name for Alexander the Great — and “kul” meaning lake in Turkic. Legend holds that Alexander camped here during his Central Asian campaign, and that his famous horse Bucephalus drowned in these waters.
